Just after 13h00 on Saturday 21 MAy, NSRI Richards Bay and the Emergency Services were activated following reports of an adult male bitten by a shark while spearfishing with a group of spear fishermen at Cape Vidal, 150 kilometers North of Richards Bay.
The KZN-EMRS Red Cross AMS helicopter and private ambulance services were activated to respond to the scene to provide medical support to the victim who had reportedly been taken out of the water onto the beach by fellow spear fishermen and who was reportedly being attended to on-scene by medical personnel who were in the same group of spear fishermen.
On arrival on-scene paramedics continued resuscitation efforts on the male suffering lacerations to his thigh and in a critical condition. The man was declared dead on-scene after all efforts to resuscitate him were exhausted by medical personnel.
Police have been called to the scene and an inquest docket will be opened.
