Summer is slowly making its way back into our lives. We no longer have to go to bed with six layers of blankets and our cheeks are beginning to return to a colour that isn’t translucent. But now that the sun has returned, many of us will get back into our outdoor hobbies and spend more time honing our ‘bikini bodies’, and it’s vitally important to remember to refill our water-bottles. Staying hydrated in summer is critical for a number of reasons.
Your body is comprised of 75% water and it’s important to drink enough liquid every day for your body to function properly – especially in hot weather or if you’re an avid exerciser. In fact, there’s a rather lengthy list of knock-on effects that occur when your body doesn’t have enough water. Fatigue, digestive issues, migraines and general lethargy all become frustratingly apparent when your body is dehydrated, which is why it’s so important to keep your body happy with good, clean water.
We’ve all seen how important water is to professional athletes, how a small army of water boys will storm the fields during halftime to ensure their teammates can grab a much-needed water break. The importance of staying hydrated reaches further than just sports, working out is also firmly connected to sufficient water intake. If your body lacks water and you are putting your muscles under strain water will be forced out of your muscle tissue, hindering its ability to tear and repair. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism found that forty minutes after drinking roughly two glasses of water your body’s metabolism is boosted by up to 30%.
The European Food Safety Authority recommends that the ideal amount of water is determined by your body type and weight. For every kilo of mass, you should be drinking 30ml of water every day, which is, on average, two litres for males and 1.6 litres for females. A common misconception is that the water you add to tea and coffee contributes to this recommended daily amount; however, both tea and coffee are diuretics, meaning they actually drain water from your body. So, if you want to stay sufficiently hydrated it’s going to have to be with water.
