The Metro Police Drunk and Driving squad, which was unveiled on Wednesday, 20 April 2011, at the opening of the Alcohol Evidence Centre in Pinetown, was kept busy during the Easter Weekend as they worked tirelessly to rid the City of drunk motorists and ensure that the roads were safe for all road users.
Since resuming their duties on Thursday, 21 April 2011, the team has arrested at least 225 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol.Over the past weekend, roadblocks were held in Umlazi s M35 (where 68 people were arrested for outstanding warrants of arrest), beachfront, city centre, Margaret Mncandi Avenue, Florida Road in Morningside and Durban North. Metro Police roadblocks will continue throughout the holiday period.
Metro Police spokesperson, Eugene Msomi has warned all motorists to refrain from drinking and driving and to respect the rules of the road. Those who are found to be flouting the rules will face the full might of the law, he said.
