Chairpersons of Municipal portfolio committees have been elected at the first meeting of the newly constituted Executive Committee (EXCO) on Tuesday morning 7 June 2011.
EXCO consists of six representatives from the ANC (including the Mayor and Deputy Mayor), two from the Democratic Alliance (DA), one each from the Minority Front (MF) and the National Freedom Party (NFP). Council Speaker, Cllr Logie Naidoo and Chief Whip, Cllr Stanley Xulu also sit on EXCO as ex-officio members.
The Council committees have been reconstituted in order to align them with the Municipality’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
The Committee Chairpersons are as follows:
- Governance and Human Resources – Cllr Nondumiso Cele
- Economic Development and Planning – Cllr Nomvuzo Shabalala
- Human Settlements and Infrastructure – Cllr Nigel Gumede
- Finance and Procurement – Cllr Fawzia Peer
- Health, Safety and Social Services – Cllr Zandile Gumede
Other EXCO members are Cllr Tex Collins and Cllr Ronnie Veeren from the DA, Cllr Patrick Pillay from the MF and NFP’s Cllr Bongiwe Mtshali.
Mayor James Nxumalo, who chairs EXCO, thanked members of the public who came out in numbers to attend Monday’s inauguration of Council.
“I want to thank all political parties for the good cooperation in making sure that the inauguration went off smoothly. I also thank City Manager, Dr Michael Sutcliffe and his team for ensuring that the event was successful,” he said.
EXCO members also emphasised the need to encourage Councillors to attend all committee meetings.
The committees will hold their first meetings on Thursday (9 June 2011) to elect Deputy Chairpersons and to adopt the terms of reference.
