KEVIN ABRAHAM SET TO FOLKIFY!
Fans of acoustic music are in for a treat as Kevin Abraham presents his brand new show ‘Folkify!’ for 3 nights at Art on Target in Target Kloof on Fri 24 Feb, Wed 1 March and Fri 3 March.
“Folkify!” Is a merging of guitar, violin and percussion, along with fine vocals and an uncomplicated approach with a sense of originality and fun.
Kevin has teamed up with violinist Janet Sklar and percussionist Kristo Zondagh for an evening of rediscovery and reinvention.
‘Musically, “Folkify!” is collaboration. Both Janet and Kristo are acclaimed artists in their own right; versatile and highly talented. They bring a rich, very satisfying element into the Folkify performances,’ says Kevin. ‘It’s an introduction to my own original songs, along with a range familiar pop and rock songs which have been re-imagined or ‘‘Folkified’.’’
Kevin’s original songs and ballads will resonate with audiences who enjoy melody and meaning.
‘It’s a simple concept’, continues Abraham; Uncomplicated, unaffected acoustic music and a chance to rethink the arrangements of my original songs and ballads too’.
Kevin began playing ukulele at a very young age, progressing over time to acoustic guitar.
His first real introduction to performing acoustic music was at the Queens College Folk club, under the legendary Hennie Van Der Mescht.
Later, as a young adult, he became involved in the iconic Four Winds Folk Club, an institution that nurtured many excellent players over the years. It was here that he began to develop his strong finger picking and signature vocal style.
Time spent in Cape Town as a student consolidated his position as a top performer in the many clubs, pubs and restaurants which offered live music in those days.
While there, he was scouted by Mountain records, resulting in national attention for his hit song, “More than Just a friend”, from the album “Inside”.
As a result of the album’s charting, Kevin had the opportunity to play and tour extensively. The demands of bigger stages and audiences resulted in a move towards a full band sound, and for a while he concentrated on delivering pop-rock shows. However, he always sustained a separate solo career, with strong emphasis on vocals and acoustic guitar.
In the mid-eighties, he left SA to try his luck “overseas” and created a highly successful career as a solo artist.
On a visit to SA in 1991, Kevin, with his wife, Michal, decided to “stay awhile” in his home town, Port Elizabeth. It wasn’t long before they were putting down roots, and from this base, he continued his career as a “pro muso” for many years, before moving into Research. After having quit professional music, Kevin has limited himself to three or four performances a year, mainly for local fans.
‘Events eventually overtake us’, says Kevin.
‘My passion for Research became a full time career, taking me on some wild and wonderful adventures. Over time, live performances took a back seat. Now I have finally decided to take the advice of good friends from the music world, and go out and share my love of acoustic music again!’
Folkify Kicks off at ART ON TARGET in Port Elizabeth, on 24th Feb, and also 1st and 3rd of March.
‘Those that have visited this venue will know its wonderful ambience, and the energy of owner BA Moolman, whose passion for the creative arts is personified in the space she’s created there’ says Kevin.
Seating will be in a chairs around cocktail table style. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own drinks along, and a variety of delicious made wraps will be on sale.
Tickets are R100 each; we strongly advise that you book ahead by contacting BA at Art on Target on 041 373 3334 or 083 728 5295.
In keeping with Kevin’s principle of supporting local causes through his performances, the 1 March performance will be in aid of the Walmer Angel Project, [details on Facebook], who work tirelessly for kids in need in Walmer Township. Headed up by Glenda Brunette and her team of dedicated associates, they sustain many day care crèches/soup kitchens and run the Shine Literacy Programme there.
