The long awaited solo album from jazz chanteuse Asanda Mqiki is finally a reality and will be recorded live in her hometown of Port Elizabeth, on Friday, 2 February 2018. The multi-award-winning entertainer will also be launching a much anticipated South African and Mozambique tour to celebrate the occasion, presented by Arte Viva Management and Concerts SA.
Asanda Mqiki’s Awards and Performance Highlights:
In 2015, Asanda Mqiki won the Standard Bank Gold Ovation Award for Jazz at the National Arts Festival as well as the MEC award for Best Individual Performer. In 2016, she was the only African artist selected to perform at the inaugural LoveBusk online festival, organised out of Australia, which saw her performance from the roof of the Fugard Theatre live-streamed all over the world. She has twice performed by invitation at the Gothenberg Culture Festival in Sweden, and in 2017 was a finalist in espAfrica’s espYoungLegends competition. Some of Asanda’s recent highlight shows include headlining the Cape Town Festival with Vicky Sampson and Jimmy Nevis, performing at the National Arts Festival, and playing for the first time with her full band at the Orbit in Johannesburg, to a standing ovation. Online culture magazine, Texx & the City, after seeing her at Oppikoppi 2016, said: “Emotive and sassy, exuding a jazzy persona unlike anything I’ve seen, she was my best vocal performance of the weekend”. With a new album soon to be under her belt, it’s sure to not be long before this songbird once again takes flight.
