Argentina’s top jazz pianist to play Durban, Johannesburg & Grahamstown with his Colegiales Quartet
Music lovers will most certainly want to diarise this one as Adrián Iaies, arguably Argentina’s current top jazz pianist, tours South Africa for the very first time. Iaies will perform with his new group, the Colegiales Quartet, in Durban, Johannesburg & the Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Grahamstown.
Adrian Iaies is a pianist, composer, arranger & producer with a prolific and multi-award winning career that stretches back more than 30 years. He has released 25 albums as a bandleader, picking up four Latin Grammy nominations along the way, and performed more than 300 concerts all over the world, including at the Lincoln Centre of New York, the Oslo World Music Festival and the Metropolitan Opera of Tel Aviv. He is also the Artistic Director of the Buenos Aires International Jazz Festival, which sees some 70 000 jazz fans congregate in the city every November, and the Usina del Arte, one of the top cultural centres in the Argentine capital.
In South Africa he will perform with his new formation, the Colegiales Quartet. The Quartet also features one of Buenos Aires’ most exciting young musicians, Federico Siksnys, on bandoneon, Colombian Diana Arias on double bass and the legendary Facundo Guevara on drums and percussion. “In this project, there is a kind of amalgamation between jazz and folkloric music, and although this cross between genres is at this stage commonplace, what Iaies and his musicians do is exceedingly original: there is not one solo with the sweetened flourishes of fusion, nor does it remind much of what one has heard… There is something very original, and at the same time very classical, in this formidable quartet” says Federico Monjeau, music critic for leading Argentinian newspaper, Clarin.
The Colegiales Quartet kick off their tour at The Chairman in Durban on Saturday 30 June, with Argentinian Ambassador Javier Figueroa in attendance. This beautiful venue is certainly a home for jazz in the city and an acoustic piano will be specially brought in for the performance on the night. The Quartet then flies down to Grahamstown where they will perform twice at the Standard Bank Jazz Festival, on Sunday 1 July and Tuesday 3 July. They complete their whirlwind tour with a concert at The Orbit in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 4 July. Full details are below and booking is highly recommended for all shows.
The tour is supported by the Embassy of Argentina and produced by Arte Viva Management, who have in recent years produced tours for a number of high profile international artists to SA including Escalandrum and Tango Jazz Quartet from Argentina, Mateo Mera from Uruguay and Plurism & Hildegard Lernt Fliegen from Switzerland.
