CoJ must find long-term solution to ongoing sewage pipe bursts in Mayfair West

6 November 2020 By admin

CoJ must find long-term solution to ongoing sewage pipe bursts in Mayfair West:

Dear Johannesburg

This week I and DA Councillor Mohammed Alex Christians conducted an oversight inspection in Mayfair West.

This comes after the DA received complaints from residents staying close to the Bree Primary School about the ongoing sewage pipe bursts. During the oversight inspection, we were joined by the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) and Joburg Water officials to assess the problem.

The ongoing sewage pipe bursts are as a result of ageing infrastructure, illegal connections into the sewer line as well as items been flushed down the drain that should not be flushed, which then creates a build-up and subsequently a blockage.

A commitment has been given by the officials that they will push the City of Joburg to allocate a budget for a long-term solution to be found for the problem.

We call on residents to not flush items such as fats, oils, solid food waste, sanitary towels, and other similar items and to please report any illegal connections to the sewer line to please report this to the City of Johannesburg.

It is important that a long-term solution is found to the ongoing sewage pipe bursts as it creates an unhealthy environment for residents in the area.

I together with Councillor Christians, will continue to put pressure on the City of Johannesburg and the relevant departments to ensure that a budget is made available so that a long-term solution can be created.
