Making Music for Madiba

16 July 2018 By admin

Making Music for Madiba:

Smile 90.4FM, The Mother City’s fastest growing radio station, will be continuing our unique tribute of Nelson Mandela, on the 18 July, when 67 buskers play 67 minutes of music in honour of Tata Madiba at 67 locations around Cape Town.

Local buskers will be taking to the streets at 12h00, on Mandela Day, and can be identified by a Smile 90.4FM poster and bucket for collecting loose change and will include recipients of last year’s donation, Bridgeville Primary.

Thanks to last year’s event, Bridgeville Primary now has a fully functioning music department. “A year ago, were equipped with a drum set and loads of enthusiasm. That was it. Anything more seemed like a pipe dream due to the prevailing economic situation. Thanks to this Smile 90.4FM initiative, all our dreams became a reality. We are truly grateful for the kick-start. Now it’s all about maintaining momentum” said Head of Music at Bridgeville Primary, Rashid Benefeldt.

Nelson Mandela once said “Music is a great blessing. It has the power to elevate and liberate us. It sets people free to dream. It can unite us to sing with one voice. Such is the value of music.” With that in mind, Smile 90.4FM Programming Content Manager, Justine Kemlo, stated that “We couldn’t have thought of a better way to pay homage to Madiba’s legacy than through the performance of music. Last year we asked our listeners to do exactly that, and they jumped on board whole heartedly. The initiative was such a positive success that we’ve decided to do it again!”

If you are wanting to be a part of the magic, each musician is able to register on the Smile 90.4FM website. Buskers will receive a Smile 90.4FM Making Music for Madiba certificate, signboard and busking bucket.

All money collected during the 67 minutes of busking will be donated towards music development for underprivileged children.
