Tom

323/365 I was at the grocery store bright and early yesterday morning, picking up breakfast for an overnight guest. In the parking lot I saw a cart full of bakery products, which might not have been unusual if they’d been in bags, but they were just thrown into the carts as though they’d been stolen. As I was standing there, contemplating the cart, this gentleman came toward me, pushing another cart just like the first.
His name is Tom, and he retired a few years ago from his job as a makeup and hygiene products salesman. Every day, he gets up early and takes the day-old bread and baked goods from the local grocery store to people who need it, Monday to a local church, Tuesday to a social agency downtown, and so on. I asked him what charitable organization he was working for, and he looked briefly puzzled. "I do this on my own," he said, as though this was something that everyone did.
Tom lives in my neighborhood and raised seven children there. He’s very proud of the fact that they attended seven different universities. From what he told me, his children seem to be a varied and successful bunch. He claims not to have had any influence on them, but I feel quite sure that he did. I mean, I only talked to him for five minutes, and he’s already had an influence on me.
Tom is #49 in my 100 Strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com.
